Customer Didn’t Have Money For The Bill Then Cashier Pays With Her Last $20 Not Knowing It Would Change Her Life
Sometimes good Samaritans are the last person you’d think of. This story is about one such person – a cashier – who was willing to part with their last $20 in order to help a customer during their moment of need. Ms. Rita Burns works at a Walgreens location in Houston, Texas. Although she is a regular woman, she has become a viral sensation after she offered to pay for a customer’s items despite only having $20 in her checking account.
The amazing gesture occurred during a warm afternoon on September 7, 2021. Ms. Rita was behind the counter helping customers check out at the pharmacy chain when customer Rina Liou came up and realized that she didn’t have enough money to pay for her items. Instead of ordering her to the back of the line or out of the store, Ms. Rita opened her heat and revealed that it was made of solid gold.

During a heartwarming interview with KHOU, Rina Liou explained that she was in a rush when Ms. Rita made her day by covering the expense at the counter.
“I’m just going to make a dash to Walgreens. And I never go there. I go there, and I get my light bulbs. And when I went to pay, my heart just sank.”

Rina had accidentally grabbed her husband’s phone instead of her wallet. Although she knew that he had Apple Pay, she wasn’t familiar with the app and hurriedly tried to figure out how it worked while waiting in line. But when it was her turn at checkout, she still hadn’t figured it out.

Ms. Rita realized that Rina was struggling to pay, so she offered to cover the bill. This was on top of Ms. Rita paying her bills that very day and being left with just about $20 in her checking account. Nevertheless, she opened her heart and gave from the bottom of it to help the woman in her moment of need.
“I just looked up at God and said, I guess I’m going to do it,” Ms. Rita said.
Rina was not willing to let Ms. Rita’s act of kindness go unnoticed. She returned to the Walgreens location later with a bunch of flowers and a thank-you note for the kind woman. She also shared a post about it on social media.
Ms. Rita Burns has worked at Walgreens since 2016, but this is not the first act of kindness she was able to do while working there. She told KHOU that she regularly helps elderly customers by carrying their bags to the car.
“The true reward is seeing somebody else smile and they’re happy, and it puts a smile on your face. And you know, if I can make someone feel better with $20, then why not? It was worth it.”

Ms. Rita’s selfless act is a reminder that there are still good people in the world. Despite the negative headlines we see on a daily basis, there are many individuals who are willing to help others without expecting anything in return. This cashier’s story is one for the ages, and it’s sure to warm your heart.
A fundraiser was started for Ms. Rita, and more than $20,000 was raised for the dedicated Walgreens employee.
Thank you, Ms. Rita Burns, for your kindness!
